Timeless: Untitled/Fantastic remixed by Georgia Anne Muldrow

Untitled/Fantastic Remixed: Georgia Anne Muldrow featuring Nokware.

Remixing Suite for Ma Dukes is a brave undertaking. Several producers and MCs at first accepted and then declined the job. In the end we think we got the right person. It is with great pleasure on the week of Mothers Day 2010 to release this remix. Done while mothering by none other than Georgia Anne Muldrow. This project began as an homage to one mothers love (Ma Dukes) and has now been remixed by another (Georgia) with her son Nokware in her lap. Two incredible women, one amazing track. Remixed.

Georgia who has done production for Erykah Badu, Mos Def and partner Dudley Perkins was an amazing person to watch at work. Her feel is so hers. She seemed so comfortable with the music. She insisted that she didn’t want to chop the song but to play along as if she was there in the Orchestra. We wanted her to sing on the track too but her microphone was in the shop for repairs – so on my suggestion she sang the vocals into the lavalier tie clip mic that we used to capture sound for the video.

This remix and the two others we have released here: Te’Amir and Jneiro will be available on a Timeless Remixed EP this Summer.

Enjoy. Turn it up.

On this exclusive video Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, teamed up with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on viola, who wrote an arrangement specifically for them of the song “Scrabble”. It is a song that influenced hip-hop producer J. Dilla. Hypnotic rehearsed with Miguel that afternoon and the sold out and enthusiastic crowd of music lovers that packed their way into the Echoplex for this special show and were not disappointed at the magic they witnessed. Exclusive music, top quality sound, stunning performance.

On Monday November 28th 2011, a heavy-hearted edition of Funkmosphere was dedicated to the life of Jovan “J-1” Coleman. Family, fans and friends gathered to hear the funk J-1 championed and collectively mourn the loss of a member of our extended musical family.

Dam-Funk paid his respects and shared his love and admiration for J throughout the night.
House Shoes played an all-vinyl set and reminded everyone that J was responsible for introducing him to the mother of his child. Peanut Butter Wolf brought boxes of Master Blazter records and offered copies to everyone in attendance. Members of the Animal Kingdom, a collective J-1 aka THE DEER founded in LA, shouted out their animal names in a somber roll call. People drank Cazadores, J-1’s favorite tequila, and put all colors of smoke in the air. Coleman (mochilla.com) brought his camera and gave those in attendance a chance to say goodbye.

Jovan Coleman was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. A self taught musician, he relocated to California in 2007 to live out his calling as a DJ, producer and drummer. J-1 quickly became an integral staple of the Los Angeles music scene, whether on the turntables, behind the kit with Master Blazter or through his numerous beat-tapes, collaborations and vinyl releases. His drive and positivity were instantly apparent. He will always be missed.

J-1 passed away in Sweden on November 27th, 2011. Donations can be sent through pay-pal to jaydrum@mugpush.com. 100% of all monies will go directly to the Coleman family.

Ras G is featured on the cover of L.A. Record for Fall + Winter, issue 105; with an interview inside by Chris Ziegler and photography by Theo Jemison.

Ras_G isn’t from this world — he’s just passing through, making music that connects to the cosmic righteousness of Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sun Ra and Dilla. His newest album — the double 10″ Spacebase is the Place, name after the part of the world where you’ll most ofter find him — contains the crushing bass-is-actually-the-place songs any Ras_G fan has been seeking on vinyl for years, and July’s Down 2 Earth is a beat tape built on the rhythm of a city bus, with gentle starts and stops that break up the (dirty / beautiful / same thing anyway) scenery. L.A. RECORD welcomes this true citizen of the universe as he settles in for another day at his Spacebase.

Pick up a copy of L.A. RECORD at the Poobah Record Shop for the full interview.

In shooting Timeless we would always look for those moments when music would just leak into the room. When the excitement for a piece or a passage leads musicians into an improvised moment. This is one of those moments.
There are very few musicians as incredible or exciting to watch as Karriem Riggins and Steve “Thundercat” Bruner… at soundcheck Thundercat took out his iphone and played Karriem Protocosmos by Tony Williams. They both knew the song and with little else said they were off… the excitement is palpable.
Buy Suite for Ma Dukes here
mochilla.com/shop/#2352
Buy Thundercat’s amazing new record The Golden Age of Apocalypse here
brainfeedersite.com/
