April 13, 2009 - [Video] "Pela Sombras"

Arthur Verocai performing "Pela Sombras" at the TIMELESS series. Presented by VTech and Mochilla.

The Timeless Series is about celebrating music. Great music, big music. Arthur Verocai’s Self Titled album from 1972 is that. When Nuts told me that carlos dafe had sung on the original album and that we might be able to get him – I was totally sold. When Carlos Nino expressed that we might be able to get Justo Almario I was equally excited.

What happened that night as captured in the attached video is musical history. One of the leaders of the Black Rio movement – Dafe gets to trade his beautiful vocal stylings with Almario an Afro-Columbian who had come to the US and ended up playing with Mongo Santamaria, Roy Ayres (yes the Roy Ayres orchestra that toured Nigeria with Fela) and Mulatu. Yes Mulatu.

Across bars, across continents, across a stage on Cal State campus histories were rejoined and hearts beat faster to joyous music. Pela Sombras a song against the US backed dictatorship in Brasil from 1964 to 1985…. thank you Arthur.

March 26, 2009 - GHOST NOTES by B+ | April 7th, 2009 | Pacific Design Center

B+:Ghost Notes:A Photographic Mixtake

GHOST NOTES, according to photographer B+, is a "photo-album" that both documents and critiques music in its relation to the world. He continues, "Vinyl culture at the beginning of the new millennium is peculiarly positioned between being completely obsolete and forming the template for "the most important North American music since be-bop--hip hop."

GHOST NOTES relies, in its basic construction, on ten years of consistent beat digging. It is littered with narratives within and around the subject. As opposed to ten years of photographs of hip hop, this is ten years of hip-hop photography.

Opening Reception
Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 | 6:00-9:00pm
Pacific Design Center • 8687 Melrose Ave, LA, CA 90069
